Prepare for the Florida Board of Cosmetology licensing exam by learning and working at iSalon. Learn Florida law and practice skills in hair care, styling, and treatment; facials; manicures & pedicures; hair removal; and makeup. Students practice the skills for this program by working and learning in the classroom and in the iSalon, a new upscale salon that is open to the public on regular school days. Program content includes, but is not limited to, communication skills; leadership skills; human relations skills; employability skills; safe and efficient work practices; Florida cosmetology law and rules; acquisition of knowledge of cosmetology and its related chemistry; and development of skill in performing the manipulative techniques required in the practice of cosmetology. This course will provide clinical experiences necessary for the development of the skills required to be a competent cosmetologist. The allocation of time to the various phases of cosmetology is prescribed by the Florida State Board of Cosmetology. Topics to be covered include: permanent waving and relaxers, hair color and bleaching, skin, scalp and hair treatments, hair cutting, styling dispensary, manicure/pedicure/nail techniques, reception, safety precautions/decontamination, and Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance, advanced styling and hair shaping, industry concepts, and exposure to a salon setting. Students will create a portfolio including: before and after photos, a resume, reference letters, awards, and a certificate of completion. Courses include: CSP0009 – Grooming/Salon Services, Facials & Nails; COS0002 – Cosmetologist and Hairdresser 1; COS0003 – Cosmetologist and Hairdresser 2; COS0009 – Cosmetologist and Hairdresser 3. Career Opportunities: Cosmetologist, Nail Technician, Platform Artist, Instructor, Salon Owner or Manager, Color Specialist, Facial, Wax and Brow Specialist, Sales Representative, Makeup Artist, Manufacturer Educator, Special Effects Artist, Blow Dry Specialist, Braid and Wig Stylist.
Prerequisites: Students must be 16 years of age prior to acceptance into the program. DOE Basic Skills Exit Requirements: Communications 8, Computation 8 (unless exempt). CASAS Exit Requirements: Communications 235+, Computation 229+ (unless exempt).
