Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School – Emerging ELD 1-2
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
This class is intended for Emerging-level students of English. It focuses on increasing students’ English skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing to a Progressing (intermediate) level. The thematic, integrated curriculum provides students with a balanced approach to learning English through authentic literature, informational texts, maps, graphs and charts, vocabulary development, and systematic skill and grammar instruction. The curriculum for ELD classes is based on the state’s English Language Proficiency standards. Class participation is essential in this class as we focus on developing students’ extemporaneous oral language ability while improving their literacy skills. Students will use oral English in various settings: to give instructions; to solicit information; to recite poetry and song lyrics; to perform sketches; and to present research. This class must be taken in conjunction with an ELA class.
Prerequisites: ELPA/ELPA Screener score level 1 or 2; concurrent enrollment in an English (ELA) class. EL (elective) credit.
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
