Gulf High School – College Readiness and Study Skills

This one-semester course focuses on guiding students to acquire additional study skills that prepare them for the demands of college. This includes the study of techniques for learning from texts, including studying word meanings, identifying and relating key ideas, drawing and supporting inferences, and reviewing study strategies. Reading I, II, and III offers students instruction in word recognition and comprehension strategies and vocabulary. Students are given opportunities to locate information in varied sources, to read critically, to evaluate sources, and to draw supportable conclusions. Students learn how various texts are organized and how authors choose language for effect. In these courses, students will select, research, analyze, adapt, interpret, and perform literary texts as a communication art. Students focus on intellectual, emotional, sensory, and aesthetic levels of texts to attempt to capture the entirety of the author’s work. Individual or group performances of literature will be presented and evaluated.
