HNR Freshman English blends the strands of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and observing as communication tools. The course presents a wide range of reading experiences including short stories, novels, poetry, and drama. Assignments are structured to call upon the student’s speaking, listening, and observing skills as they communicate information for a variety of purposes.

ADV Freshman English blends the strands of reading, writing, speaking, listening, observing, and using technology as a communication tool. The course is designed to provide a wide range of reading experiences with print and non-print materials that have literary, informational, persuasive, and practical purposes. Students are required to use the writing process and criteria for effective writing to demonstrate their abilities to write in a variety of forms and for multiple audiences and purposes. Speaking, listening, and observing skills are used to communicate information for a variety of authentic purposes. In addition, students continue to integrate inquiry skills and technology to communicate ideas.

HNR Sophomore English is a literature and composition course that seeks to enhance the student’s understanding, effective use, and enjoyment of language. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to read, write, and think analytically and creatively as they will be required to do so in college and the professional world.This course will require students to use the writing process assignments, work collaboratively with peers, and work  independently.

ADV Sophomore English continues to provide a wide range of reading experiences with print and non-print materials that have literary, informational, persuasive, and practical purposes. Students are required to use the writing process and criteria for effective writing to demonstrate their abilities to write in a variety of forms and for multiple audiences and purposes. Focus is placed on the informational form for the purpose of recognizing, using, and analyzing: author’s purpose, organization patterns, text features, and persuasive techniques. Speaking, listening, and observing skills are used to communicate information for multiple purposes.

AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational, literary, and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in research-based written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team.

HNR Junior English continues to help students progress in their mastery of the mechanics of the English language as well as to help students develop an appreciation for various types of literature. During the junior year, American literature is emphasized.

ADV Junior English is designed to prepare students for both the collegiate level of analytical and research reading/writing as well as to relate writing topics for real world application. Students will also strive to connect the components of American Literature, of both fiction and nonfiction, to the abstract concept of the “American Dream.” Students demonstrate their academic writing in a formal MLA formatted research piece as well as in other styles and genres. These other writing styles include trans-active, expository, personal, and literary. This course will give students the opportunity to communicate orally through presentations or group work, analyze several different texts for real world application as well as for aesthetic purposes, and to use technology to enhance their reading comprehension and writing skills.

This course will fulfill content expectations for Advance Program Junior English. The reading focus for the course will be American literature, with a particular focus on African-American and female writers. This course intends to give voice to the writers who are not often the focus in an American literature survey. Writing for this course will meet the expectations for advanced level.<br>Focus: African-American Literature and Women’s Studies<br>Course dependent on registration numbers. Focuses on academic writing. Provides instruction in drafting and revising essays that express ideas in Standard English, including reading critically, thinking logically, responding to texts, addressing specific audiences, researching and documenting sources. Includes review of grammar, mechanics and usage. This course will meet critical reading and literary analysis requirements for English 3. Students enrolling in this class must meet Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC) academic requirements and must be prepared to enroll in JCTC.

Build on what you learned in AP Seminar to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest. Through this exploration, you will design, plan, and conduct a year-long research based investigation to address a research question.<br>Course may be used to fulfill English graduation requirements.

AP English Language and Composition corresponds to the college composition course; it is an advanced writing course that includes the study of rhetoric and argument. This focus requires the use of nonfiction and allows students to write in several forms—narrative, analytical, expository, argumentative—on many different subjects. This course will also teach students to read primary and secondary source material carefully, to synthesize material from these texts in their own compositions, and to cite source material using conventions recommended by professional organizations. The main goal is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose of sufficient richness and complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers.

HNR Senior English continues to help students progress in their mastery of the mechanics of the English language as well as to help students develop an appreciation for various types of literature. During the senior year, English literature is emphasized.
