An introduction to the common native, cultivated, ornamental, and exotic plant species in southern Florida. The major focus is angiosperms and gymnosperms and, to a lesser extent, pteridophytes. This course will also provide an overview of the study of plants (botany) including taxonomy, phylogeny, identification, structure and function, and economic value. Objective: To familiarize students with the structure and function of plants, the identification of plants, and the plants of southern Florida, including how to identify native plants using diagnostic keys and other resources. Students will work in the field and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and lab at Biotech as well as at other local sites. Prerequisite: One course in general biology. The purpose of this course is to provide students with an in-depth study of the animal kingdom. The content should include, but not be limited to, animal cell structure and function, animal genetics, animal classification, and use of the taxonomic key, comparative invertebrate anatomy and physiology, comparative vertebrate anatomy and physiology, animal behavior, life cycles, and animal interrelationships with man. Laboratory investigations of selected topics in the content which also include the use of the scientific method, measurement, laboratory apparatus and safety are an integral part of this course. The district shall develop a description of additional requirements to provide for in-depth or enriched study of the course requirements.
