The Sports in United States Society course examinesthe vital sociological role of sport in the making ofUnited States society and culture, and vice-versa. Thecourse analyzes the reasons for and popularity ofyouth, high school, collegiate, and professional sportsand the interrelationship between sports and othersocial institutions, such as the economy, education,media, and politics. Inequalities and deviance insociety that are reflected in sports are discussed, alongwith social progress championed through sports.Current issues and controversies in sports that are amicrocosm of society are also presented.
