Focuses on the development and revision ofevidence-based analytic and argumentative writing,the rhetorical analysis of nonfiction texts, and thedecisions writers make as they compose and revise.Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research tosupport their arguments. Additionally, they readand analyze rhetorical elements and their effects innonfiction texts—including images as forms oftext— from a range of disciplines and historicalperiods.

This course focuses on the study of Britishliterature (England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales),writing modes and genres, and essentialconventions for reading, writing, and speaking.The students develop an understanding ofchronological context and the relevance of periodstructures in British literature. Focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing aboutimaginative literature (fiction, poetry, drama) fromvarious periods. Students engage in close readingand critical analysis of imaginative literature todeepen their understanding of the ways writers uselanguage to provide both meaning and pleasure. Asthey read, students consider a work's structure,style, and themes, as well as its use of figurativelanguage, imagery, and symbolism. Writingassignments include expository, analytical, andargumentative essays that require students toanalyze and interpret literary works.

Students will formalize and extend the mathematicsthat they learned in the middle grades; deepen andextend understanding of linear relationships, in partby contrasting them with exponential phenomena,and in part by applying linear models to data thatexhibit a linear trend; use algebra to deepen andextend understanding of geometric knowledge fromprior grades; and tie together the algebraic andgeometric ideas studied.

The study of similarity leads to anunderstanding of right triangle trigonometry andconnects to quadratics through Pythagoreanrelationships. Students will pull together and apply theaccumulation of learning from their previousmathematics courses. Methods from probability andstatistics will be used to draw inferences andconclusions from data. Students will expand theirrepertoire of functions to include polynomial,rational, and radical functions. The study of righttriangle trigonometry will be expanded and thenused to model periodic phenomena. Experienceswith functions and geometry will help students tocreate models and solve contextual problems.
