Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
The ultimate goal of this Music Theory course is to develop a student's ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. This course is primarily designed for the student who plans to pursue music at the collegiate level, or as a career. The course will instill mastery of the rudiments and terminology of music, including: notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords, metric organization, and rhythmic patterns. Students will progress to include more sophisticated tasks such as: composition of a bass line for a given melody, implying appropriate harmony, realization of a figured bass, realization of a Roman numeral progression, and analysis of repertoire. The development of aural skill is a primary objective. Students will develop their "musical memory" and their ability to articulate responses to formal, stylistic, and aesthetic qualities of the works.
