This course offers a primary understanding of the Japanese language, focusing on developing the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication. Students will require more time to achieve proficiency, especially in reading and writing. Initially, the skill focus should be placed on speaking and listening without ignoring reading and writing in the target language’s writing system. As the students become more proficient, a balanced emphasis of all four skills becomes more attainable. The culture and civilization of the Japanesespeaking world are integrated into all aspects of the course through reading, listening, and viewing authentic materials. Students will develop confidence in using spoken Japanese to describe familiar topics such as family, hobbies, and school life. By the end of the first year of world language study, students should be able to understand and communicate in the target language at a novice mid to novice high level. Novice mid speakers are able to use memorized phrases and lists of words. Novice high speakers are able to use simple sentences and ask/ answer questions about familiar topics.
