This course offers a primary understanding of the German language, focusing on developing the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication. The culture and civilization of the German-speaking world are integrated into all aspects of the course through reading, listening, and viewing authentic materials. Students will develop confidence in using spoken German to describe familiar topics such as family, hobbies, and school life. By the end of the first year of world language study, students should be able to understand and communicate in the target language at a novice mid to novice high level. Novice mid speakers are able to use memorized phrases and lists of words. Novice high speakers are able to use simple sentences and ask/answer questions about familiar topics.
