Examines art as a language of expression and a tool for storytelling. Students investigate how personal and community identities are shaped by their environments, interrogate dominant narratives that perpetuate bias, and explore the history of divestment and redlining in Baltimore. The curriculum emphasizes the role of art in building community, self-reflection, and social activism. Topics include the power of stories, dominant and counter narratives, graffiti as place-based communication, self-reflection, visual examination of Baltimore, self-representation, art as documentation, art and propaganda, monumental art, and independent activism. Technical skills include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and design.
