English 9 is an integrated approach to reading, writing, speaking, listening, and research. Through composition, vocabulary skills, grammar and usage exercises, one research paper, and exposure to a variety of literary forms, students will establish a solid foundation in communication skills.

English 10 will focus on critical reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students will read a variety of works and genres to include plays, short stories, poems, and novels. Writing skills will continue to be a focus in building toward mastery of essay writing. Some units will have project -based assessments. Some units will allow for student choice reading options, while othe rs will have whole -class required readings. Overall, students will continue to build on their varied communication skills throughout the course. English 11 ENG30 0/301 English 11 will focus on critical reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students will read a variety of works and genres to include short stories and novels. Writing skills will continue to focus on mastery of essay writing, specifically the five -paragraph e ssay. Some units have project -based assessment. Some units will allow for student choice reading, while others will have whole -class reading requirements. A portion of the class time will be allotted for preparation for the ACT test. Students will be required to use technology for presentations. Students ill continue to build on their varied communication skills throughout the course.

Students will focus on evaluating and analyzing various works of fiction and nonfiction written in the last 50 years through reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Speech (DC) ENG41 1 Explores the fundamentals of effective oral presentation to small and large groups. Topic selection, audience analysis, methods of organization, research, structuring evidence and support, delivery techniques, and other essential elements of speaking successfully, including the listening process, form the basis of this course.
