Advanced ELD 4 is an English language arts course designed to successfully transition English learners into grade level English language arts. The course is structured around the framework of the California State University Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) and explicit English Language Development will be facilitated through Dr. Kate Kinsella’s English 3D and Academic Vocabulary Toolkit instructional resources which employ research-based instructional strategies and approaches specifically designed for English learners in accessing core content. The course of study and curriculum align with the standards-based English language arts course and key English Language Development standards focused on providing learners with the skills and academic language needed to interact and engage with a variety of genres of text in order to become independent and critical readers, as well as skillful writers of narrative,argumentative, and informational compositions. Learners will learn how to appropriately utilize academic language to critically question, evaluate, and interpret the ideas of others. Through the explicit instruction and interactive activities implemented, learners will be taught specific skills to assist them in becoming careful and alert readers, thoughtful and reflective writers, and effective and compelling speakers and listeners.
