Prerequisites: Foundations of Behavior Health Transportation to Sunset HS provided The Behavioral Health CTE Option Program located at Sunset High School is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in behavioral health. Students travel to Sunset High School for two class periods to participate in the program, with district transportation provided. The program provides students with an overview of Trauma Informed Behavioral Health Care, how to engage in work with diverse populations, and understand cultural competence related to mental health. Emphasis will be placed on principles of laws and ethics, scope of practice, confidentiality, and respect of human dignity. Students will gain a comprehensive introduction to behavioral health systems, theory, and practice across the lifespan. Students explore developmental psychology theories and a range of evidence-based, emerging, and culturally responsive treatment approaches. Using an ecological systems framework, students examine mental health within social, ethical, and cultural contexts while building employable skills such as communication, self-regulation, cultural intentionality, and advocacy. Student experience culminates in workplace learning opportunities that includes job shadows and/or internships, providing firsthand exposure to behavioral health settings. Students will have the opportunity to hear from industry professionals and obtain certifications. Successful completion of year 2 will award students with the Higher Education & Career Path Skills required course for graduation.
