These four semester long classes incorporate study in the following disciplines: creative writing, journalism, speech and debate, and video production. Writing focuses on the writing process, story development, genres, and editing. Speech and debate concentrate on public speaking. Video production covers planning, directing, and producing.

Newsmagazine and digital news students work as part of The Muse staff. Students develop skills in journalism production across print, multimedia, web, and video/audio platforms and learn journalism history, ethics, and management. Students are expected to produce school and community publication efforts. Time outside of class is required.

Yearbook students work as part of The Marquee staff. Students develop skills in journalism production across multiple platforms and learn journalism history, careers, and management. Students are expected to produce school and professional publication efforts. Time outside of class is required.

This course provides opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in all stages of television production. Students plan, write, produce, and perform in productions, including the DSOA Today daily broadcast. Students learn script writing, lighting, filming, directing, editing, and professional skills.

Focused on the advanced use of correct and effective language and organizational skills in preparing, delivering, and evaluating argument and debate. Students critique debates and present well-structured arguments. Participation in competitions and practice outside the school day is required.

Enables students to refine communication and critical-thinking skills for college and career readiness. This class serves as the 10th grade Yearbook/Marquee course.

Enables students to develop advanced writing and language skills for creative expression in literary forms. Focuses on personal writing style, mastering craft elements, workshopping pieces, and practicing regular revision.

Study of theory and practice in poetry and fiction, including collateral readings and extensive workshopping of creative works. Students prepare a final portfolio and learn how to submit works for publication.

Focuses on universal themes and archetypes, building facility with rhetoric through classic literature, essays, and speeches. Students analyze texts, model their writing after them, and practice advanced text revision. This serves as the 12th grade Creative Writing option for those not in Dual Enrollment.

Prepares students for upper-level film courses. Lessons focus on pre-production, production, and post-production including screenwriting, storyboarding, cinematography, editing, visual effects, and sound.

Students develop a compilation of literary works in magazine form. Covers aspects of publishing, editing, creative writing genres, guidelines for submission, magazine production, illustration, and marketing.
