Algebra 1 introduces the student to algebraic thinking through expressions, equations, formulas, quadratics, functions, inequalities and their graphical representations. Geometry is designed to emphasize the study of the properties and applications of common geometric figures in two and three dimensions. Students will apply critical thinking, inductive and deductive thinking in developing logical explanations and proofs. Emphasis on real-world application involves breaking large problems into manageable sub-problems, and improving drawing and visualizing skills. Biology is a year-long course designed to represent a college preparatory science course, with learning objectives informed by College Board and Next Generation Science standards. In biology, our studies are centered around four "big ideas": evolution, free energy, information and systems. To this end, we will explore the hierarchy of life at all levels, from cells to organisms, populations to ecosystems. We will engage in scientific reading and writing, laboratory investigation, data interpretation and academic discourse.

Environmental science is a year-long college preparatory course with learning objectives informed by College Board standards. We will explore the world around us, from living and nonliving resources to how human activity is shaping the Earth's future. We will do this by engaging in scientific reading and writing, laboratory investigation, data interpretation and academic discourse.

Students explore the fundamental principles of chemistry that characterize properties of matter and how it reacts. Inquiry activities and traditional laboratory techniques are used to obtain, organize and analyze data. Conclusions are developed using both qualitative and quantitative procedures. Topics include, but are not limited to: experimental design, the scientific method, measurement, atomic structure, electron configuration, the periodic table bonding, gas laws, properties of liquids and solids, solutions, stoichiometry, reactions, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases and nuclear chemistry.

In this course, students will explore the physical sciences that make up the world around us. We will cover topics such as kinematics, sound, optics, energy, Newton's Laws, planetary forces and electricity to answer real-world questions. The course is organized to address Next Generation Science Standards.

Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. Students work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3-D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation.

Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. Students apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3-D architectural design software.

Students in English I will read a variety of texts, including novels, drama, and informational. Using the anchor texts as a thematic focus for the quarter, writing will serve as the primary emphasis for this class. Students will learn to write well-supported responses, with a focus on argumentation. This course is designed to address the Common Core reading, writing, speaking and listening standards.
