I am an experienced electrical engineer with an advanced degree in electrical engineering. In graduate school, I was a teaching assistant for two semesters (basic semiconductor circuits and electro-mechanical laboratory). During 2012-2013, I taught fundamental electrical circuit analysis to engineering students for two semesters at Penn State Harrisburg. I also have experience tutoring mathematics one-on-one to high-school students. My goal is to improve and help solidify the student's understanding of the subject matter. With a better understanding, it is expected that the student will be motivated to approach problems with increased skill and eventually confidence.A student's insight is important to solving mathematics and calculus problems. Sometimes this insight is based on physical intuition--but it does not need to be. I spend time to ensure that the student starts on a correct approach. With years of hands-on-experience in electrical engineering and physical systems, I am able to associate the equations describing a system with its behavior. If concepts in mathematics or physics escape you, or you're having trouble figuring out how to set up problems to obtain their solution, I would enjoy helping you work through that difficulty.

I'm a small business owner, coach, and until very recently I joke I've been a "professional student" (I went straight from undergrad to graduate school). I have a BS in Environmental Science from Juniata College and two MS degrees from Oregon State (Water Policy and Management and Geography) as well as a Conflict Resolution Certificate also from OSU.I love learning, am passionate about helping people succeed (seeing others have "lightbulb moments" is one of my favorite things), and have worked with students ranging from middle school aged, to college freshman through seniors, graduate students, and to adults.I was a TA and instructor during graduate school at Oregon State University (an environmental science/sustainability intensive writing course called Sustainability for the Common Good) for 3 years (2012-2015) and was also a TA and private tutor for 2 years during undergrad at Juniata College (2010-2012).My husband and I recently moved to Alexandria, VA but I have also lived in the Bay Area in California, was born and raised in Oregon, and went to school in small town Pennsylvania, and spent a short while living in Vermont while my husband was in school there.I believe my teaching strengths are patience, excitement, and having a multitude of ways to convey information that help you learn. If my initial teaching techniques do not work for you I will find another way- because YOUR learning style is one of the keys to success in education (I've found it's true in coaching, too!). I enjoy working with people in person and am excited to do online tutoring as well.My areas of expertise that I enjoy tutoring are environmental and earth sciences, general science, biology, ecology, geography, communication, writing and editing (including grammar, style, sentence and essay structure), English, public speaking (I do this often for my job, too), nutrition, and basic computer skills. I'm also very interested and have much experience with HOW to learn, study, and stay organized (this is necessary for a small business owner!). I've tried numerous techniques and styles personally and helped people, "learn how to learn." This is an area I've done a lot of work in personally and have also helped students, friends, and colleges.I've very excited to work with new, enthusiastic students who are willing to learn and work through challenges!I'm also an athlete (volleyball is my main sport but I'm gaining an interest in rowing and boxing), coach, avid reader, music lover, and dog mom of a 9 year old Weimaraner named Penelope.I look forward to getting to know you and am excited to work with you!

I'm here because I believe that reading, writing, and thinking are all intimately connected and I want to work with you to find confidence and joy in all of them. I graduated from Columbia University cum laude with a degree in English Literature, where I received departmental honors for my senior essay. During my time at Columbia, I was accepted into their Oxbridge Scholars program and was given the opportunity to study abroad at Cambridge University. In addition to my love of literature, I'm passionate about teaching and have been tutoring or working jobs in education since I was in middle school. Most recently, I worked as a high school English teacher. Whether it's a higher score on the (P)SAT or ACT, a critical eye on a tough essay, or something related to my arts interests, I can't wait to begin working with you.

My philosophy is that everyone has the capability and capacity to learn and master new information and skills. Also, it takes an understanding, patient, dedicated, and highly skilled teacher to help a learner reach their full potential. I pride myself on this philosophy when I taught taught English abroad, taught English in NYC public secondary schools for 5 years, and interned at Maryland primary schools for 5 years and schools in Philadelphia, PA for 2 years. I earned a BA in Spanish and Psychology from McDaniel College and my teaching certification in Elementary Education in MD. To add, I have masters level graduate degrees in TESOL (from Columbia University), Mental Health, and Professional Counseling (from University of Pennsylvania). Now, I am working towards a Ph.D. in School Psychology (at Howard University). Even though I feel comfortable and strong in tutoring an array of subjects (e.g., reading/ literacy, writing and mathematics), I am enthusiastic about tutoring subjects such as Spanish,Statistics, Psychology, and other subjects. Spanish is a language that has afforded me the opportunity to travel, work, and develop friendships across the Americas, which is why I love teaching and tutoring those who want to build their language skills in either Spanish and/or English. Statistics and Psychology are subjects related to my profession and helps me understand issues related to society, culture and social justice. Thus, I am passionate about subjects related to Psychology and Statistics, since I believe related topics are quintessential to understanding inequities and disparities to make a difference in the world.

I am currently a senior at George Mason finishing my BA in History, specializing in the modern era, and Central and Eastern Europe. My tutoring experience has primarily been with elementary or high school students. I have focused on reading, writing, computer skills, and math for elementary students. For high school students, I can offer experienced tutoring in with composition, history, and SAT prep. Tutoring is a wonderful chance to help others gain confidence in their academic lives. The pressure to succeed in school can be daunting. I have been grateful for help in my studies, and enjoy helping others in turn.A theatrical plot consists of the selected elements of a story which are chosen to present in a limited amount of time. If the entire sequence of events were explained, that would be history. Such an exploration of all manner of details is the essence of the discipline. Studying across cultures provides insight into our common humanity, and likewise, exploring different eras in history makes it clear that many timeless themes unite people of all eras. Historians the use physical sciences, economics, linguistics, literature and other subject areas to analyze various aspects of civilization. Each era and region has a particular charm. I want to help students find perspectives that make history come alive for them.I also find Geology very exciting and can help students explore topics like mineral formation, tectonic forces, erosion, and diverse landforms.Reading and writing are the basis for learning in any discipline. The skills needed to articulate ideas clearly in writing help with public speaking, reading, and analysis in various areas of study. Instructors will consistently require pupils to express their thoughts and findings in different formats like short essays, research papers, and lab reports. Students should learn to examine their own writing critically in order to improve.

I am a Master's in Public Policy graduate from Georgetown University with a strong interest in government, politics and history. While at Georgetown, I served as a Teaching Assistant for a Master's level Comparative Government and Policy course in my program, working mostly with foreign students struggling to grasp the sophisticated concepts presented in class. Prior to attending Georgetown, I earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Government & Politics and History from the University of Maryland, College Park. Between degrees, I worked as a Youth Development Professional at an elementary school Boys and Girls Club, which made me appreciate opportunities to teach and mentor students at all ages and at all levels of academic achievement. I am excited to use my own academic training to help students reach their academic potential. I also am a political junkie with a lot of campaign experience, and I love sports and love playing guitar.

I am a firm believer in the notion that no one is a "non-math" person. When a student is given unique perspectives and is allowed to discover new concepts in an adaptable environment, mathematical ideas can really "sink" in. My personal style is to put less emphasis on rote and memorization (which can be overwhelming) while delving more into truly understanding what is being taught. This makes homework quicker and test time easier - especially for those who get stressed during exams. I recognize that every person learns differently, so we will take time to tailor our sessions to your learning style.I graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics and focused much of my studies in nonlinear dynamical systems, though I have a great love of many pure mathematics topics.I look forward to working with you or your child to help you excel in class or at work!

I am a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of International Studies. My graduate degree is in International Economics and Russian area studies. I also have a Bachelor's degree in International Relations with a concentration in foreign languages. I studied abroad for one year in Vienna, Austria and nine months in Moscow, Russia. I have traveled, lived and worked in several countries overseas. I am currently employed full-time at an executive branch agency with the federal government. I also teach German to adult learners. I am very passionate about language teaching and have a deep understanding and tolerance for diverse learning styles. My students have praised me for my engaging teaching style of incorporating different learning platforms in the classroom (i.e. games, film and video clips) and for being able to make difficult grammar points more understandable for them. As a firm proponent of foreign languages, being part of any educational curriculum, I also enjoy incorporating the relevant culture to the foreign language experience. I want my students to succeed at language study, but recognize that it can be difficult for some, and I always strive for patience and understanding with those who struggle. In my spare time, I enjoy keeping fit and spending time with my wife and two children. Alpine skiing in the winter and tennis in the warmer months are my two other life passions.
