My interest in being a tutor in Chinese Language and Culture was generated from my teaching experiences. I am passionate about teaching Chinese language and culture because I enjoy helping diverse students understand my own culture, language, and literature. The key to my teaching is to get the students more involved; offering help outside of the classes based on individual needs; creating a student-centered classroom with enough interactions and meaningful guidance; motivating students with different methodologies and making goal-oriented classes along with interesting and accessible materials. This means that a good teacher should be able to adopt different ways of teaching when facing different students or settings and should help them as they encounter new and unfamiliar things. At the same time, it is important for a good teacher to learn how to teach hard things in interesting ways. Last but not least, learning how students learn is useful since it can help me teach in understandable fashions.
Concerned with creating a student-centered classroom, I balanced my classroom content between being textbook-based and being content-based. This approach makes the student-centered learning realistic. I provided more authentic language input and more effective communications between the educator and students and between the students themselves, which emphasizes students more than anyone else. Moreover, I provide them with abundant online learning materials and enable them to learn through different ways. For example, the Chinese-reading world and YouTube websites give students a great place to do reading and viewing online and check their learning progress by themselves.
When focusing on helping different students and exploring different cultures with them, it can be necessary to use various teaching strategiesand to continue learning new ones. By examining the way I teach and recognizing my students' weaknesses, I learned from my teaching experiences. I like to help my students who learn in different ways, by learning from them and teaching in the way they understand best.
When teaching difficult or challenging subjects, I adopt different ways of teaching. Using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has facilitated this teaching method in many ways. For example, I teach first-year Chinese. In my characters (vocabulary) class, I make the characters easy to remember. With the help of CALL, students learned the cultural background of characters, viewed imaginative pictures and identified the original shapes of characters on the power point slides to help them remember those new words in an efficient way while still having fun. When I was teaching non-native students' Chinese culture and grammar, I emphasized both the situations it is used in as well as the awareness of the cultural gap and the ability of communication between different cultures.
Understanding that students possess different learning styles, I believe the role of a teacher is to allow students to have the freedom to explore knowledge and guide students with help easily available outside the classroom. I am continuing to learn and to find the best ways to teach depending on students' diverse needs. I hope this statement can explain my understanding of teaching, and can link my conceptualization of effective teaching to the student processes and outcomes of valuable learning, positive development, and productive motivation, which speaks to the core values of teaching and learning.
