Hullo there!I am a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, where I received a B.A. in History (after moonlighting as a literature major) and a B.M. in Vocal Performance. Following graduation, I went on to earn my M.A. at Eastern Illinois University in European History and American Intellectual History. Now, I am progressing toward a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at Chicago where I study British History, World History, Science and Technology Studies, and the Philosophy and Teaching of History. As you can probably tell, school is one of my true loves. I enjoy working with students who feel similarly, but I also recognize that for some students, school can be incredibly frustratingand that's OK. I'm here to help you work through those frustrations using a wide array of teaching techniques, a great deal of enthusiasm, humor, and encouragement, and various lesson plans that will help you to access your strengths and develop your skillsets. I firmly believe that all students are creative individuals and intellectuals-in-training, and I promise to take your concerns seriously and help you work through anxieties so that you can be your best student self.My favorite topic to tutor is History, but I also love to help students with ACT preparation and college admissions essays. I recognize that applying to college can be very stressful, and as a future professor, I think it is important that I help walk students through that process, sharing advice and critique and making sure that everyone has the chance to represent themselves well when those dream schools are on the line (IWU was mine!).In my free time, I am a creative writer, a singer, an amateur artist, and an aspiring vegetarian chef. I love reading anything that broadens my perspective on the worldacademically or otherwiseand I geek out to all things Sherlock and sci-fi. I also love nature, photography, and traveling.

Anatomy & Physiology Tutor • +34 Subjects

My teaching philosophy is to create the best possible learning community by offering a variety of instructional approaches and foster the development of success skills for my classroom and beyond. Regardless of the course I want students to want to learn. This desire to learn is present in everyone but it needs to be activated. Anatomy & Physiology is a very challenging course but the subject is fascinating. It presents an opportunity to spark interest & interject humor. The rectal valve, for example, is important structure for everyone. It prevents that “you hope no one noticed” fart from being loaded. As you can imagine, it gets giggles but it captures attention, induces laughing and endorphin release. Happy brains want to learn. What also facilitates this “want to learn” is that I quickly establish an open dialogue with students. Involving the student in their own learning also lies at the root of my philosophy. I encourage students to participate in discussion and provide an environment where they feel like they can take risks. Even when students are wrong I always applaud them for their efforts (“Good try/Not quite/excellent idea”). Step in my classroom and you’ll probably find it rather noisy; reflecting learning is in progress.I believe it is important to present myself as a friendly and supportive instructor. I take time to get to know my students, their names, what their career goals are or what their interest is in the course. I also make time to chat with the students and it does not have to be about the class. Students are valued members of my classroom regardless of their background, education or other social factors.Part of my effectiveness as an instructor is my ability to relate scientific concepts with everyday concepts students are familiar with. For instance, students have trouble visualizing ionic movements and how these movements relate to the establishment of resting membrane potential. I turn myocytes/neurons into banks and ions into dollars. Students understand money and can relate that concept to ionic gradients and movements. While it may sound silly, ions as dollars, but it is an effective means of concept visualization for the students. To be an effective instructor I rely on my creativity and analytical abilities. I constantly research and develop lesson plans & assignments, review, take out what didn’t work and continually change my approaches. What works for one class may not work for the next. I try creative ideas including 3D modeling, cartoon depictions and even create crime scenes with a murder to solve as part of a dry bone lab. Studies show that happy and engaged brains learn better.

I've always enjoyed learning. As a tutor, I want to help my students enjoy it, too. I've got an MS in Chemical Engineering and an M. Div from a theological seminary, so I'm comfortable with a wide range of academic topics. I love working one-on-one with students because it allows me to find creative ways to help them master new concepts. My teaching style is all about helping students problem solve so that the end result is not only a better grasp of a subject but also a stronger sense of self-empowerment anytime they tackle something new.I grew up in Lake Tahoe, CA, where my winters were spent in skis and my summers were spent in swimsuits. I also enjoy hiking, soccer, and just about anything else that involves being outside. I'm a recent transplant from California, so on a rainy day, you'll probably find me inside with a cup of tea and a movie or a good book.

I truly love both mathematics and physics. I studied both of them in college and found the subjects to be engaging and useful. During high school and college, I gained a lot of experience tutoring informally and formally in a range of math subjects and physics topics. Even as a major of physics in college, I would sometimes end up tutoring other physics majors in some Junior level physics classes if I had taken the class before. In my free time, I like to hang out with friends, read (mostly sci-fi and fiction), play video games, and study new topics in physics and math. I am currently taking a class at the University of Washington, Bothell for fun, it's called 'Abstract Algebra'. I fell in love with math early when I realized it was just one idea that was built on another. I then took physics in my senior year of college and fell in love with that as well.In my opinion, physics is so fascinating because of it's predictable nature. It let's physicists predict the existence of stellar objects--like the prediction of black holes by Einstein in the early 1900s-- predict where our spaceship will land if we fire the rocket at this or that angle, or predict if and how it is possible to produce clean, near limitless energy in the form of cold fusion. It also, by its nature, seeks to explain the different phenomena and mysteries that the world contains. Quantum physics explained why the periodic table of elements was periodic, one of the biggest mysteries for chemists since its development.

I have an AA in science from Cascadia Community College, and am now studying mechanical engineering at Saint Martins University. When I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in aerospace or biomedical engineering. I enjoy math tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to help other students work toward their educational goals by gaining a better understanding of their course material as well as more interest and appreciation for the subject. When tutoring, it is important to me to stay positive, find the best way to explain a concept to each student, and connect the math to physical concepts or applications as much as possible. I am currently a math tutor at Saint Martins, and I enjoy helping students at many different academic levels. My past tutoring experiences include working as a Spanish tutor at Cascadia and working with my younger siblings, who are homeschooled, in a variety of subjects. I was also a competitive swimmer in high school, and am now a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor. In my free time, I enjoy outdoor activities including swimming, hiking, and skiing.
