I am a graduate from Arizona State University, The Honors College, with a degree in Biochemistry and a minor in Global Health. I was awarded the Moeur award as I was able to complete university with a 4.0 GPA.Since AP Chemistry and AP Biology in high school, I have developed a passion for these subjects. Moreover, in college, my desire to share my knowledge and help others in these tough subjects greatly strengthened. Therefore, I chose to tutor middle-school and high-school students in a variety of subjects. Out of all the subjects that I offer, I love to teach biology, chemistry, and algebra because of my expertise and excellent ability to accurately convey the concepts. I also offer tutoring for SAT Math sections since this closely corresponds to my interests.Currently, I am an online peer mentor for first-year chemistry/biochemistry-degree students at ASU. This class has taught me many of the technical aspects of learning. From previous experiences, I learned that every student has their own learning style that they flourish in. While one might learn effectively with pictures, another student might grasp the concept with hands-on experience. My approach to tutoring is quite simple; after analyzing the student's strengths and weaknesses to create a mental record, I adapt my teaching style accordingly.In my free time, I love to work out at the gym, volunteer at Hospice, and watch movies. Although I have never been one for specifics, for example remembering the dates of wars, my strength lies in analytical skills and critical thinking. Because of this, I'm able to teach better because the information I'm imparting is not data, it is a new way of thinking and considering problems. Being raised on a farm in Missouri, I've always had a strong interest in math and science. I especially liked the applied side of things. The "bean in a cup" experiment in elementary school grew into a hobby greenhouse as a teenager providing my family with vegetables for the table. It went on to grow into a full time family business which helped put me through college. The practical experience I got with all of this was invaluable. With more of a hands on approach, applied science and math allows you to take what you think you learned in class and see it in action in real life experiences. The experiences allow better integration of abstract concepts into reality, concreting what you know and leaving you with a desire to find out more.I attended college at Northwest Missouri State University and received a B.S. in ACS-accredited Chemistry in 2008. I have therefore had a lot of chemistry, including organic and p-chem as well as algebra, trig, geometry and multi-variate calculus. While I was a tutor for the Chemistry/Physics department (and asked to tutor College Lit and Bio labs) I actually had several classes in biology and agribusiness that led me to my graduate work at Arizona State. I am currently finishing up my PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology with emphasis on microalgal cultivation. I have a wide array of interests and enjoy spending time outdoor hiking and mountain biking.Overall, I'd say I'm a natural born problem solver. I love solving problems, especially abstract ones requiring creativity and imagination.
