As a young girl, I frequently crossed the border between my home in Brownsville, Texas, and Matamoros, Mexico. Captivated by Matamoros, I was oblivious to the complexities of immigration issues. While in Matamoros, I immersed myself in the local culture, enjoying festivals at the plaza, eating at local restaurants, and shopping at the market. I was unaware that invisible borders held stories far beyond my understanding. As a recent college graduate, I ventured into Matamoros with great curiosity; I wanted to connect with migrants and asylum seekers whose stories I watched unfold on local and national news. I was driven to visit Matamoros, hoping to understand and address the challenges faced by the individuals on the international bridge. As I approached the border fence, its imposing structure became a stark reminder that I was standing between the threshold of two countries the familiar life I knew in the United States and the unknown aspects that awaited me in Mexico. Families from various countries stood near their makeshift encampments, desperately seeking safety and a better life in the United States. There were families from multiple countries. Indelible scenes unfolded before me: young children with eyes of innocence and desperation, tugging at the sleeves of exhausted parents, all carrying the hope for a better future. On the international bridge, I sparked a conversation with Leandra, a woman from El Salvador who was traveling with her husband and two children. Listening to Leandra's stories, I felt the weight of their journey as she explained that she had to escape the horrific violence and crime in their home country along with economic hardships. The fear and resilience in her children's eyes left a permanent mark on my soul. I spoke to an immigration officer and learned that hundreds of families stay in their tents until they are called to meet with immigration officials. These families need legal representation to apply for asylum as they seek refuge status.
