Previewing Texts

Get Ready Before You Read!

Previewing means looking over a text before you start reading it. Check out the title, pictures, headings, and special words. This helps you guess what the text is about and gets your brain ready to learn!

  • Skim the first sentences and the headings.
  • Look at any pictures or diagrams.
  • Think about what you already know about the topic.

Previewing makes reading easier and more fun!

Examples

  • Before reading a chapter, you look at the pictures and read the headings to get an idea of what you'll learn.

  • You scan a poem's title and first line to guess what it's about.
