What Are Context Clues?

Context clues are hints in the sentence or paragraph that help you figure out the meaning of tricky words.

Types of Context Clues

  • Definition clues: Sometimes the author tells you what a word means.
  • Synonym clues: The word might be explained by another word with a similar meaning.
  • Antonym clues: The word could be explained by its opposite.
  • Example clues: Examples help you understand the word.

Why Learn Vocabulary This Way?

Using context clues makes you a stronger and faster reader because you can understand new words without stopping to look them up!

Examples

  • The sentence says, 'The arid desert was dry and hot.' You use 'dry and hot' as clues to figure out 'arid' means dry.

  • 'She felt elated, or very happy, after winning the prize.' The phrase 'very happy' helps you know what 'elated' means.
