Author's Purpose and Point of View

Why Did the Author Write This?

Every author writes for a reason—maybe to inform, persuade, or entertain you! Figuring out the author's purpose helps you understand the text better.

Different Points of View

The author might tell the story from a character's perspective (first person) or as an outside observer (third person). Recognizing point of view helps you see how the story is told.

Clues to Look For

  • Words like "I," "me," and "my" show first-person point of view.
  • Words like "he," "she," or "they" show third person.
  • Look for facts, opinions, or jokes to guess the purpose.

Examples

  • A story uses 'I' and 'my,' so you know it's from the main character's eyes.

  • An article uses facts and numbers to teach you, so the purpose is to inform.
