Basic Concepts

Making Inferences

What Is an Inference?

An inference is when you use clues from the text and what you already know to figure something out that isn't directly stated. It's like being a reading detective!

How to Make Inferences

  • Pay attention to the words and actions of characters.
  • Combine what the author says with your own experiences.
  • Ask, "What do I think is happening, even if the author didn't say it exactly?"

Practice Your Skills

Making inferences helps you understand characters' feelings, predict what might happen next, and enjoy the story even more!

Examples

  • The story says Tim's hands were shaking and his face was red. You infer that Tim is nervous or embarrassed.

  • The text says Lisa looked out the window at the dark clouds and grabbed her umbrella. You infer that it's about to rain.

In a Nutshell

Use clues from the text and your own knowledge to figure out hidden meanings.
