Understanding Main Ideas and Details

What Is the Main Idea?

The main idea is the big point or the most important thought in a story or article. Think of it as the heart of what you're reading! Every paragraph or passage has a main idea, and it's your job to find out what the author wants you to know most.

How Do Details Help?

Details are the little pieces of information that support or explain the main idea. They might tell you when something happened, describe a character, or give facts that help you understand the story better.

Tips for Finding Main Ideas and Details

  • Ask yourself, "What is this mostly about?"
  • Look for repeated words or ideas.
  • Check the first and last sentences of a paragraph—they often contain clues!

Why Is This Important?

Knowing the main idea and details helps you remember what you read and talk about it with others.

Examples

  • After reading a story about a lost puppy, you decide the main idea is 'A girl's search for her missing dog,' while details include where she looked and who helped her.

  • In a nonfiction passage about volcanoes, the main idea is 'How volcanoes form,' and details include types of volcanoes and famous eruptions.
