Chemistry Tutor • +2 Subjects

I am a student at Oregon State University majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in chemistry. I have a passion for teaching chemistry and helping people come to learn and respect it. It is a challenging subject, but I believe being successful in it is not dependent on how "smart" you are, but on how the subject matter is approached and taught to you. My teaching style is to help the student understand not only how to solve individual problems, but to understand and respect the concepts themselves. I do this by helping explain the concept behind the different problems and then walking through practice problems the student, offering different ways to approach the solution. Chemistry builds on itself, so understanding the fundamental concepts is vital. I believe that no one is truly bad at chemistry, they just haven't had it explained to them the right way. I learned chemistry through candy and games (Bottle Cap and skittles make the best Lewis Structures!). In my spare time I love to try new foods, travel, hike, go white water rafting, and get through my endless pile of unread books. I love broadway to the point that my family and friends will often laugh about how I can always be heard singing some show tune or another all times of the day.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +54 Subjects

I am a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, and also minored in Spanish. Now I am pursuing a Masters in Teaching in the Seattle area. I recently spent a year teaching English in the beautiful country of Costa Rica as a TEFL certified instructor. I was able to teach and tutor people of all ages and all skill levels, from high school students to professionals looking to expand their skills set. These experiences have given me a lot of confidence in tutoring English related topics such as reading and writing, and I am fluent in Spanish after living abroad for over a year, so I would greatly enjoy tutoring anybody with the desire to improve in that subject as well. However, my ultimate goal is to become a high school history teacher, so I would be very interested in tutoring the subjects of American or European history. It is my belief that education is the most valuable resource we possess, since it is what gives us the confidence to succeed, the ability to solve problems, and allows us to achieve our goals. In my spare time, I enjoy travelling, watching sports, kayaking, and getting out to experience the outdoors.

I am a recent graduate of Yale University where I earned a Master's degree in Global Affairs. At Yale, I worked as a Teaching Fellow for a class on data governance. I also volunteered at a local non-profit where I tutored elementary-school aged children in reading and writing. For those of you who are preparing for graduate school, I know what you're going through! Especially if you're juggling the application process alongside a full-time job, I want to help you make the most of your time. I've been there before myself, and can share a few tips and tricks that will help you achieve your target scores.I hope to work together to identify areas with the greatest potential for improvement, and then set a study schedule so that you can stay on track with your goals. This way, the process will feel a lot more manageable and you can focus your energy on more important things (like maybe your personal statement)! As previously mentioned, I also have experience working with younger age groups. I enjoy working with children and sharing my love for reading with them. You can probably guess that my favorite part of the school year as a kid was always our summer reading challenge!

I was educated at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. I received a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and Secondary Education, with a minor in History. During my years of classroom teaching, I led an after-school credit recovery program for Social Studies students working on virtual classes, and in 2013 I worked as a tutor for SAT verbal/ACT English prep at a learning center in Bellevue. I tutor all subjects and test preps relating to English, Language Arts, Reading and Literature, and I enjoy tutoring for Social Studies and History. My personal interest in art and philosophy has led me to consider branching out to tutor those subjects as well. I most enjoy tutoring for SAT Verbal, because of the combination of test-taking strategies, practice with challenging vocabulary and grammatical rules, and textual analysis that the subject demands. My tutoring style is rigorous and focused, but I often make use of illustration and contemporary examples to illuminate concepts and make them memorable for the students I work with. Outside of teaching, I enjoy creating art and short stories, collecting rare films and music, cooking elaborate dishes, and being outdoors with my camera, searching for wildlife.

I am currently a High School Chemistry Teacher who got his degree in Mathematics with a minor in Chemical Engineering. I am passionate about the Stem Subjects and helping people learn. In my free time I like to read and play basketball. I also enjoy playing video games and I just started to do Crossfit which I am enjoying a lot. This past summer I worked with the Tucson Big Brothers Big Sisters picking up donations from all over the area.My teaching style is one that I like to think is extremely adaptable. Every student is different and so are their learning styles and preferences. My goal is to make the subject I am tutoring not only easier but fun. Math is my favorite subject in school and I know that it is an extremely intimidating subject for many students. My method of breaking down problems into their bare elements and working from there helps prevent students from shutting down because they have no idea what to do when they see a new problem. While I am here to help students do better in their classes I am also here as a mentor for schooling in general. I am always willing to help out with students who need more help outside of their classes. If there is a non-academic issue that arises while tutoring I will always do my best to help the student through because I believe that if the student is distracted he will not be able to focus on studying and their grades will suffer.

I love Math and have enjoyed teaching it to students who need help. I understand that Math can be complicated, and it is not something you get right away. I believe with practice and skill one can be better able to understand it. I know this because I also grew up not liking Math but ironically ended up teaching it. I believe you need to be patient and understand the student's strengths and weakness in order to effectively teach Math to students. Relating Math to real life examples can make it more interesting and fun for students. I believe my tutoring/teaching experience and desire in teaching math would be beneficial for the student. I love one on one tutoring and enjoy the pleasure of making a difference in the education of my students.

I believe that the best learners have an innate passion for the subject that they are pursuing. I learned this very early on when in grade school I dreaded English and performed poorly in my classes. But when my teacher asked me to try and relate to the characters I was reading about, this allowed me to articulate my responses in the form of essays very effectively. And in the subjects that I performed well in school, I noticed that I intrinsically loved those topics. Thereby, learning first starts with developing aninterest in the subject material you are pursuing, and only afterwards will you truly be able to grasp concepts and apply them to a variety of scenarios to demonstrate subject mastery. My goal will be to not only teach students concepts, but also help them gain an appreciation and love for the subject they are learning about.

I've always loved helping out students, especially when it comes to academia. My approach when I'm working with a student is to explain to them in a way that they'll understand. I'll ask them to show me their thought process before we tackle the problem; that way, I can efficiently help them solve it! I graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Earth and Space Sciences in Summer 2020. As implied by my degree, I enjoy learning and teaching within the STEM field! I tutor in subjects such as geology, environmental sciences, middle school math, algebra, and high school chemistry. I love to tutor in these subjects for two reasons: they were my favorite subjects to learn growing up and the material can be challenging at times. But not to worry! There are little tricks and skills that can be developed over time to make math and science enjoyable to learn! I bring a lot of enthusiasm into every session and my goal is to make each student feel supported in their studies. My experience in tutoring dates back to high school when I tutored students in algebra and would help my classmates with their school work. In my spare time, I enjoy video editing, acting, singing, and cooking!
