Unified Physical Education provides a unique opportunity for students with and without disabilities to come together through ongoing educational and physical activities. The Unified Physical Education course is structured around the national physical education standards and grade-level outcomes, which include gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness. Additionally, the class supports the development of leadership skills for all students, and the empowerment of ALL students to foster an inclusive class and school-wide environment. Course Outcomes• Increased physical fitness and activity-specific skills (SHAPE National Standards 1 & 3) $\\bullet$ New friendships and social inclusion fostered among classmates (SHAPE National Standard 4) • Reinforced positive habits and reasoning resulting in better health & lifestyle choices (SHAPE National Standard 5) • Advanced social and leadership competencies (SHAPE National Standard 4) $\\bullet$ Deeper understanding of activity/game/sport rules and strategies (SHAPE National Standard 2) $\\bullet$ Movement confidence and competence developed in a variety of physical activities/activity settings (SHAPE National Standard 5). This course is designed to provide individualized and group learning experiences for students with special needs. Students in this class must have an IEP with stated goals and objectives for physical education, a section 504 plan, or special permission. This course may be taken in place of Physical Education I if it provides the least restrictive environment for the special needs of the student. This course may be repeated for credit.
Prerequisites: Admittance to the course is determined by the school counselor, physical education staff, and special education staff.
