Etymology, a language studies one-semester course based on the Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts, is the study and application of the derivation of English words and word families from their roots in ancient and modern languages (Latin, Greek, Germanic, and Romance Languages). Students analyze meanings of English words by examining roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Students analyze the connotative and denotative meanings of words in various contexts and the reasons behind language change.
Prerequisites: 4 credits in English
