Year one: Medical Assisting Pathway: Explore the foundations of healthcare through anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, mental and behavioral health, and cultural competence. Develop core clinical and administrative medical assisting skills such as vital signs, patient intake, sterile technique, injections, Electronic Health Records (EHR) documentation, and scheduling. Year two: Prepare for the NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assisting (CCMA) credentials. The Medical Careers program engages students in open-ended problem solving within the medical model where they study topics including anatomy and physiology, behavioral health, bloodborne pathogens, cultural, social and ethnic diversity, customer service, pathophysiology of diseases and disorders, emergency care, healthcare delivery systems, healthcare career exploration, health and wellness maintenance practices, and employability skills. Through mastery of the foundational industry-recognized National Consortium of Health Science Education standards, students will acquire important academic skills necessary to become future healthcare professionals such as medical mathematics, communication, infection control, safety practices, legal and ethical responsibilities, utilization of health information technology, leadership and teamwork. Students will develop technical skills including measuring vital signs, CPR and Basic Life Support, first aid and emergency hemorrhage care, and preparation, collection and conduction of common clinical diagnostic tests. Students will gain hands-on experience in therapeutic skills for patient care and treatment simulated in both inpatient and ambulatory settings.
Prerequisites: Biology (successfully completed and passed without adjustments to standards). Minimum 8th grade reading level ability
