Washington (George) High – Percussion

This Percussion Ensemble course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop technique, solo and ensemble music-making skills, and knowledge of the historical contexts of a wide variety of non-Western music. Students will be immersed in rhythm through hands-on learning with various percussion instruments including but not limited to: bucket drumming, Afro-Brazilian drumming, and steel pan. This course will emphasize performance skills such as collaboration, timing and rhythm, individual practice and technique development, movement, and musical expression. In addition, students will explore, compare and contrast rhythmic content in a wide variety of forms of Afro-centric music from North America, South America, and the Caribbean since colonization.
