In this college level course, students will use problems and project-based instructional strategies to investigate various medical interventions that extend and improve quality of life, including disease prevention, diagnostics, gene therapy and CRISPR, pharmacology, and surgery. Students will study antibiotic resistance, epidemiology, genetic testing, cancer biology, and genetic engineering. They will also review the history of interventions such as cochlear implants and organ transplants and become aware of current developments. Using molecular biology techniques, students will perform college level laboratories exploring genomics and proteomics.

Prerequisites: This course is part of the Biomedical Sciences completer program. Human Body Systems is a prerequisite or may be taken concurrently. This grade 12 class is part of a four credit Career and Technical Education completer program. A minimum of one credit each in both college preparatory math and science is required in grade 12.
