Valley High – American Sign Language I – Alternate

In this course, students will develop skill in the use of sign language, beginning with contact signing and working toward proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL). Students will be able to communicate, explore different facets of deaf culture, and identify forces that have shaped education of the deaf in the U.S. The format of classes will vary; lectures, videotape, practical experience, and student projects. All cultural and other relevant material will be integrated with the instruction of language skills. This course does not cover the breadth and depth of the American Sign Language I class. This course is designed to facilitate learning outcomes appropriate to the student's instructional needs as documented in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This course DOES NOT meet the state graduation requirements.
Prerequisites: Students who qualify for the Alternate Standards in grade 11 and 12. This course may be repeated for credit.
