Valley High – Health II – Alternate

Students will use the introductory instruction from Health I to expand on the development of skills, attitudes, and behaviors that will enable them to make decisions that promote healthful behaviors. Students engage in inquiry and problem-solving approaches utilizing a developmentally appropriate progression of content related to health education concepts. Topics included are: Mental and Emotional Health; Substance Abuse Prevention; Family Life and Human Sexuality; Safety and Violence Prevention; Healthy Eating; and Disease Prevention and Control. Skills developed in relation to health enhancing behaviors include analyzing influences, accessing valid and reliable information, interpersonal communication, decision-making, goal setting, self-management, and advocacy. This course does not cover the breadth and depth of the Health II class. This course is designed to facilitate learning outcomes appropriate to the student's instructional needs as documented in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This course DOES NOT meet the state graduation requirements.
Prerequisites: Students who qualify for the Alternate Standards in grades 11, and 12. Completion of Health I – Alternate. Note to Parents/Guardians: Parents/guardians will have three options for the unit of family life and human sexuality through the electronic permission process. The options are the CCPS Family Life and Human Sexuality Unit, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Family Life and Human Sexuality Unit, or they can exercise them opt out right of both the CCPS and MSDE Family Life and Human Sexuality Units. HEALTH III Course: 303008 (Honors) ½ credit Students in this honors level course will study the current health issues facing young people today, including nutrition, public health issues, behavioral sciences, mental and emotional issues, healthy relationships and human sexuality, and health careers. Students will have opportunities to research, to debate, and to explore topics in greater depth using inquiry and problem-solving approaches. Students will have the opportunity to receive certification in ASHI CPR/AED/First Aid. Prerequisites and other notes: Successful completion of Health II; and may only be taken by grade 11 and 12 students.
