Oral and written proficiency continue to be emphasized. German IV \[AP German Language and Culture\] (GRM4030P) AP exam required for possible college credit The AP German Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real‐life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP German Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in German. The AP German Language and Culture course engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music, laws, conventions, institutions); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions). Building on the Advanced proficiency of AP German IV, this course moves students toward the Superior level on the language acquisition scale. Students will develop the ability to speak and write with greater fluency and accuracy on complex, abstract topics. Through engagement with authentic materials like literature and film, students will learn to support opinions, construct arguments, and communicate with the nuance of an educated native speaker. The course is conducted exclusively in German.
