Psychobiology is the subarea of psychology that takes a biological approach to understanding behavior.  Psychobiologists study the biological events – genetics, neural, endocrine - that underlie each and every one of our thoughts, feelings and actions.  Research in this area focuses on the relationship between brain and behavior but often extends to physiological processes elsewhere in the body (e.g. stomach, glands).  This course will explore what is currently known about the biological basis of emotional responses, mental illness, memory, states of consciousness, sensory perception, thought and language and several neurological disorders.  Students will also participate in hands-on labs and dissections to further explore the biology of behavior.  (Prerequisites:  SC430C/H Biology, SC440C/H Chemistry,  and current science teacher’s recommendation) C8390C INTRODUCTION TO NUTRITION FOR HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCE C8390H HONORS INTRODUCTION TO NUTRITION FOR HEALTH AND MEDICAL SCIENCE This course begins with an overview of basic nutrition to include types of nutrients, separating foods into food groups and building a healthy plate. We discuss the importance of a balanced diet, different diet trends, nutrition throughout the lifecycle and nutrition around the world. This class uses hands-on activities and labs to relate course material to real life applications to teach students how to live a healthy lifestyle through high school and beyond. C8316O SPORTS MEDICINE C8316H HONORS SPORTS MEDICINE Sports Medicine is a comprehensive course that teaches students about medical conditions and injuries as they relate to athletes and a physically active population. The year begins with an overview of Sports medicine to include careers in the field, how to handle emergency situations and environmental considerations. The majority of the course covers musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology at each joint. We cover common sports related injuries at each joint as well as how to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate these injuries. Along with this, we learn bracing and taping techniques and how to create an appropriate rehabilitation program for many of these injuries. C8317O SPORTS MEDICINE II C8317H HONORS SPORTS MEDICINE II Sports Medicine II builds upon basic knowledge acquired in Sports Medicine I on topics such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise program design, and injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and management. Students will assess fitness, measure body composition, and design exercise programs. Students will also prepare for a career in sports medicine, including completing an internship, practicing interview skills, and building a resume. (Prerequisite: C8316H Sports Medicine)
