Japanese 1 covers daily living, practical conversations and discussions of Japanese culture. Hiragana, the Japanese syllabify writing system, and katakana, the Japanese syllabify for foreign words, are taught, and kanji characters are also introduced. Successful students exit the course with Novice-Mid proficiency level in interpersonal speaking and a Novice-Low proficiency level in all other modes of communication, aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the ACTFL proficiency scale.
