Steinmetz College Prep High SchoolEthnic Studies / Dual Credit African American Studies

Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester

This course will examine the role of all of the ethnic groups in US history, including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), Immigrants from Northern, Southern, and Eastern Europe, and the role of diversity of religious backgrounds. We will analyze and explore social issues from these multiple perspectives to arrive at a multicultural understanding of U.S. society. We willstudy race and ethnic relations in the U.S. through the lens of major issues: racism (structural and institutionalized), discrimination, privilege, and migration. We will examine the various reasons different groups migrated away from their home countries the varied ways they were treated when entering the United States, and how this resulted in different experiences for all groups both short and long term. We are also going to examine the role that media outlets play in creating messages that work towards eliminating or perpetuating racism. We will explore how change was demanded in the US by examining non-violent and violent resistance. Through close analysis of historical events and social issues, my goal is for students to feel accountable in helping create a more just society in the United States.
