The primary content for the course pertains tothe examination of the American legal systemand the nature of specific rights granted underthe United States Constitution. Content shouldinclude, but is not limited to, the historicalantecedents of laws and the basis for thecreation of laws, the background, principlesand applications of the United States Constitution, the rights protected by the Constitution and precedent-setting casesrelated to these rights, the process forenacting criminal laws at the state and locallevels, the stages of the criminal justicesystem, the government and private agencieswhich provide services to individuals accusedof crimes, the citizen's role in the legal system,the role of women and diverse cultural groupswithin the justice system, and careers in thejustice system.
