This syllabus is designed for learners who are learning Portuguese as a foreign language. The aim is to develop their ability to use the language effectively for practical communication. The course is based on the linked language skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing, and these are built on as learners progress through their studies. The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture and civilization of countries where the language is spoken, encouraging positive attitudes towards language learning and towards speakers of foreign languages. The purpose of this course is to enable students to begin to acquire proficiency in American Sign Language through a linguistic, communicative, and cultural approach to language learning. Emphasis is placed on the development of receptive and expressive signing skills and on the acquisition of the fundamentals of applied grammar. Cross-cultural understanding is fostered and real-life applications are emphasized throughout the course.
