Salem High School – Introduction to Journalism

Course 04280 This course introduces students to the journalistic style of writing, editing and research, providing an overview of print and broadcast media. Students will learn to analyze and understand the effects of their writing on an audience and the role that journalism plays in society. Students will learn how to write news stories, opinion pieces, features and sports stories. In addition, they will study press law and how it relates to the First Amendment. Students who attain an appropriate skill level may apply for Advanced Journalism, the class that publishes the P-CEP school newspaper, The Perspective, or they may apply for the Professional Publications class, which produces the P-CEP yearbook. Both applications are available in December for the following school year.
