Rouse High School – College and Career Development
Apr 2026 · 2nd Semester
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) class prepares students for college and careers by teaching academic skills, time management, and personal organization. Preparation for college entrance exams (SAT/ACT), Socratic tutorials, motivational activities, and career and college exploration are also part of the curriculum. Enrollment is determined by a student application and interview process. AVID places identified students in a rigorous curriculum and gives them needed support for success. Each year of AVID builds on the next and is intended to be an elective choice all four years of a student’s high school career. In AVID I-II, students learn strategies for success, such as collaborative discussion skills, analytical writing, rhetorical reading, study skills, and focused note-taking strategies. In AVID III-IV, oral communication skills, resume preparation, college and career research, and college essay and application support. Field trips to a variety of college campuses and college and career events occur every year to expose students to authentic college experiences and gain valuable admissions and career information.
