Speech is a semester-long course designed to introduce students to a wide variety of speaking experiences. Students learn how to plan, organize, and deliver various kinds of speeches for the purpose of informing, persuading, entertaining and demonstrating materials. Students complete additional work in original oratory, extemporaneous speaking, and debates of contemporary topics. Students also develop skills in oral interpretation which includes selection, preparation and oral presentation of literary material, including drama, prose, and poetry. Active participation in simulation work is encouraged. Public Speaking courses enable students, through practice, to develop communication skills that can be used in a variety of speaking situations (such as small and large group discussions, delivery of lectures or speeches in front of audiences, and so on).
