AP Calculus courses are taught on the $4 \times 4$ block schedule. All AP Calculus students are placed together in AP Calculus AB for the first semester. AP Calculus AB is a prerequisite for AP Calculus BC. Those students continuing the second semester are placed in AP Calculus BC. One unit of credit is awarded for each of these courses. The course content is tied directly to the College Board AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC Topic Outlines and indirectly by objective to state and district guidelines. The curriculum covers differential and integral Calculus of single variable functions and includes in the AP Calculus BC course extended applications to parametric, polar, and vector-valued functions as well as sequences and series, numerical solutions to differential equations, indeterminate form limits, and improper integrals. The primary textbook is the current CMS adopted textbook; however, other supplements and resources will be used. The official calculator will be the TI-84 Plus, although familiarity with the TI-89 will be encouraged. Most classroom calculator discussions and/or demonstrations will center on the TI-84 Plus calculator. Only those students with prerequisite skills, self-motivation, and a willingness to commit to a rigorous and demanding mathematics course should elect to take AP Calculus. Homework is assigned daily and the resulting practice is most important to success. Students will be expected to keep up with assigned work, not be absent from class unless absolutely necessary, and make up work missed due to absences. An intense 3-4 week review for the AP exam is incorporated as part of the AP Calculus BC course. Students practice multi-step, multi-concept problems, bringing together the entire scope of the course. Free response and multiple choice questions are practiced and thoroughly reviewed. There will be at least one practice exam session conducted after school hours that all students will be expected to attend. Students who take AP Calculus AB only will be encouraged to take the AP Calculus AB exam in May, but will not be required to do so. AP Calculus AB students opting to take the AP exam will be expected to complete AP Calculus AB review material and attend weekly review sessions during the second semester. Students taking AP Calculus BC will be expected to take the AP Calculus BC exam or the AP Calculus AB exam. Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus. It is recommended students have earned a B or better in Honors Pre-Calculus.
