Potomac High – Foundations of Interpreting and Translation

Prerequisite: Three (3) World Languages credits in the same language; or native speaker w/ACTFL intermediate-high proficiency (or EOY level 3 Assessment equivalent) This course is a practical introduction to the field of interpreting and translation . Students will gain an understanding of the history, theoretical concepts, standards, and essential aspects of oral interpreting and written translation. The course will address the fundamentals of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and the role of interpreters. Additionally, students will engage in practical analysis to understand the extensive work behind the development of translations. Students will be exposed to problem-solving and decision-making skills that are applicable within the profession and beyond, using the World Languages Standards.
