This class serves as an advanced-level course for the Patient Care career pathway of the Health Science and Medical Technology industry sector of courses. This is a continuation course after Human Body Systems for those interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, particularly sports medicine and athletic training. Instruction will include, but is not limited to: descriptions of jobs in Sports Medicine via current industry professionals, full-body anatomy and physiology, types of diseases, disorders, injuries and how they affect the human body, as well as the medical terminology used in health care. The course will focus on the systems of the body, their parts, purposes, functions, and strategies for optimal maintenance and performance. Through the in-depth study of whole-body anatomy and physiology, review of human body systems and learn about the processes involved in the prevention, treatment, management and healing of injuries. Students are introduced to medical terminology, and evaluation techniques for common diseases and injuries, as well as strategies for rehabilitation and recovery. Students will learn how to improve current nutritional habits while simultaneously incorporating exercise and fitness into their daily routines. The class will emphasize healthy living and will open students' eyes to a variety of options in the medical field and beyond. To receive honors credit, students must complete an end-of-course project and score 35/50 or better to receive a weighted grade on their transcript.
