Pershing High School – IB Quantitative Analysis, Dp
Mar 2026 · 2nd Semester
A year-long course, IB Qualitative Analysis: Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis are the means by which chemists, biochemists, and scientists in related fields determine the identity, purity, or amount of a chemical of interest. Traditionally these determinations were made using a variety of wet methods – chemical reactions that would give you a yes/no diagnostic result or a molar quantity of reagent added, which could help you find the amount of a known molecule present in your solution. At present, analytical chemistry has turned towards more modern methods – spectroscopic methods that use electromagnetic radiation to similar ends, and chromatography which uses solvent properties to separate compounds. In biochemistry and biomedical science, researchers use a variety of similar methods, along with a variety that derive from antibody recognition. This course will be an exploration of modern analytical methods and the context in which they are embedded. A student will gain exposure to modern research practices, and a leg up for assisting research in internships or their collegiate career. IB Qualitative Analysis and IB Quantitative Analysis are taken concurrently.
