What will I learn in English Language Development?

The purpose of this course is to enable high school students who are native speakers of languages other than English to accelerate their development of English communication and literacy skills. This course will strengthen English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills so that students can successfully comprehend high school-grade-level text and communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting.  The texts and online instructional programs focus on a wide range of topics in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and academic language in order to support students in meeting the knowledge demands of increasingly complex texts. Scaffolding is provided as needed during reading and writing and is removed progressively as students' abilities improve.

Prerequisite: Placement based on ESOL teacher recommendation.

Florida Virtual School Placeholder

FLVS ON & FLVS OFF \| Grades 09 - 12 Students may request to take Florida Virtual School (FLVS) courses as part of their academic schedule. Each student may enroll in up to three (3) virtual school periods, which will appear on the schedule as FLVS placeholders. These placeholders provide students with dedicated time during the school day to work on their online coursework.

Important Guidelines:

- Application Required: Students must apply for FLVS and submit all course requests before the end of the current school year. The application link is provided below.

- No Schedule Changes in August: Schedules will _not_ be adjusted at the beginning of the new school year to accommodate late FLVS requests. All approvals and requests must be completed during the designated application window.

- Student Responsibility: Students enrolled in FLVS must actively participate and remain on pace following the PCHS academic calendar. Failure to engage may result in the removal of the placeholder period.

- Course Availability: FLVS offerings vary and are subject to the availability and approval of both FLVS and the school.
