Aviation is comprised of five main units. The first unit is Fundamentals of Flight, and it includes the training process, basics of airplane systems, and an understanding of aerodynamic principles. The second unit is Flight Operations. It includes airport facilities, air traffic control services, communication procedures, and sources of flight information. The third unit is Aviation Weather. Students are introduced to the variable atmosphere and its effect on aircraft operations. The fourth unit, Performance and Navigation, includes aircraft capabilities and limitations in terms of performance parameters as well as navigation using charts, radio aids and GPS. The fifth unit, Integrating Pilot Knowledge and Skills applies aeronautical decision making principles and flight-related physiological factors to practical use in the cockpit. Scenario based training helps provide insight into how previously learned knowledge and skills can be applied during a cross-country flight. Ground and simulator based training will be provided. Near the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to take the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam.
