This course merges lectures of traditional pathologic conditions with the unique approach of clay modeling techniques, integrating clinical skills and biotechnological innovation to bridge the realm of medical intervention with disease process. In alignment with NGSS, the five units within this course are arranged to address all of the human body organ systems. There are three key phases per unit. In the first phase, students will dive into the anatomy and physiology of disease. The majority of methods employed herein are intentionally hands-on, allowing students to explore tissue organization prior to and following structural change. There will be an emphasis on the difference between normal and abnormal conditions and what challenges arise once a disease presents itself. In the second phase the class will take a clinical focus. Students will advance their health occupations skills by learning to operate a collection of diagnostic and/or therapeutic instrumentation. This introduction to a host of medical devices is included to enhance the students’ comfort level with actual equipment central to medicine today. At the core of each unit’s third phase, is the engineering investigation. Initially, students will be exposed to historical dilemmas of the clinical environment and the correlating solutions derived by professionals. Next, individuals will experiment with aspects of engineering that overlap with features of normal human physiology. To conclude each unit, the students will engage in an iterative process by which they will, in teams, identify their own unsolved medical dilemma. It will be their final task to submit a theoretically substantiated resolution as well as a series of originally designed prototypes that confront their defined issue.
